Celebrating Cabrini Health's nursing graduates

13 January 2011

On Thursday 13 January, 41 nursing graduates will be acknowledged for their successful completion of Cabrini Health's annual graduate nursing program.

The 52-week program provides a safe and supportive environment for our graduate nurses to make the transition from being a student into employed professional practice.

Most graduates are placed at Cabrini Health's acute care hospitals including Malvern and Brighton, as well as our palliative care service at Prahran.

Many of the graduate nurses were nursing students, primarily from Deakin University and Australian Catholic University, who spent time in Cabrini Health wards during undergraduate clinical placements.

According to Executive Director of Nursing Associate Professor Susan O'Neill, the program helps participants to develop greater competence and confidence in their professional roles and to develop an increasing willingness to take on responsibility for practice, decision-making and further learning.

"Here at Cabrini Health, we strive to serve the needs of the community to the best of our ability and work to meet each patient's personal and individual needs," Associate Professor O'Neill said.

"Our reputation for providing high quality, compassionate care is integral to all we do and has been forged by the hard work of our staff.

"We aspire to achieve 100 per cent right care, 100 per cent patient satisfaction and 100 per cent staff engagement.

"Our nurses comprise half of Cabrini Health's staff and we are proud of their work."

Professor O'Neill says Cabrini Health's nurses are a highly skilled team, vital to the delivery of quality care to patients, their families and the community.

"Graduate nurses are a very important part of our nursing recruitment plan, as more than 90 per cent of graduate nurses continue on at Cabrini after their graduate year," Professor O'Neill said.
