Cabrini Health Social Outreach Program
In 1992 the Governing Board established the Mission Enhancement Fund. Each month contributions are made to the Fund in support of outreach projects. Management and determination of projects is the responsibility of the Cabrini Apostolic Committee (CAP).
Cabrini Health supports a variety of charitable projects – both within Australia and overseas. It provides financial, clinical, personnel and management assistance to the projects.
Local
- Cabrini Centacare – the Malvern branch of the Catholic Welfare Australia counselling and education service.
- Cabrini-Open Family Youth Bus – outreach service for homeless 18-25 year olds or ‘at risk’ youth.
- The Moira Kelly Children First Foundation – facilitating the medical evacuation of children and young adults unable to access appropriate medical care in their own country.
- Edmund Rice Centre – re-settlement, tutoring programs and family support for new immigrants.
- Employment Integration Program – employment opportunities for people unable to compete for work on the open market.
- Knoxbrooke Incorporated – training and employment opportunities for adults with intellectual and other disabilities.
- Lighthouse Foundation & Cabrini Lighthouse – a family environment for young people at risk.
- Medical Evacuations – medical care for people unable to access acute care services in their own country.
- Refugee & Asylum Seeker Health Network – a joint project with Melbourne’s Catholic hospitals providing funding for a clinic for Medicare ineligible refugees.
- Sacred Heart Mission – physical, social, emotional and spiritual support for those in need of a diverse range of services.
- Scholarships – educational support for those who are experiencing financial constraints, but who demonstrate a commitment to the wider community.
- St Kilda Parish Mission Drop In Centre – a community service for people psychiatric disabilities in the Port Phillip, Stonnington and Glen Eira districts.
- St Mary’s House of Welcome – a mission of the Daughters of Charity offering services to the inner city homeless.
- The Way Community – residential services for homeless men due to mental illness or alcohol dependence.
- Very Special Kids – biomedical engineering support, the provision of medical equipment and disposables for families of children with life-threatening illnesses.
Interstate
- Injartnama Aboriginal Outstation – a therapeutic community in the Western Arrente region, 125 km from Alice Springs.
- Deadly Treadlies – training opportunities in bike building for young people living in Alice Springs.
- Lightning Ridge – the ‘New Friends Volunteer Visiting Project’ provides a service to people isolated by ill health, disability or frailty or lack of transport.
- Santa Teresa Mission Health Clinic – primary health care for the people of the Mission and the surrounding districts of Alice Springs.
International
- Afghan Australia Volunteer Association – donation of medical equipment and supplies and funding for training of healthcare workers for the new community health centre in the village of Shamoli, 40 km from Kabul.
- Bosaso, Somalia – provision of an orthopaedic service a the Bosaso Hospital.
- Clarist Sisters, India – provision of medical trainee to work at the Holy Family Hospital in Kodarma.
- Interplast Australia – funding of medical teams who undertake short-term work overseas.
- PNG Orthopaedic Outreach – an orthopaedic/reconstructive service to Wewak and Medang.
- Prince Wellington Ngu Pathology Department, Kingdom of Tonga – donation of equipment and supplies to the Department.
- St Philip’s Mission, Swaziland – comprising schools, health clinic, maternity unit and hostel for children orphaned by HIV-Aids.
