Cabrini Hospital Brighton Redevelopment

Melbourne’s Bayside residents will soon have a world-class hospital on their doorstep when Cabrini Health opens its expanded community hospital in Brighton’s New Street in early 2009.

The upgraded centre will meld high-tech medicine and clinical expertise to an environmentally-friendly facility with a focus on women’s health, cancer services and specialty surgery.  Women’s health will include breast surgery and gynaecology services; cancer services will comprise chemotherapy and general cancer surgery, while key surgical specialities will include orthopaedics, gastrointestinal, plastic and reconstructive and ophthalmology.

Allied to state-of-the-art technology, the Brighton facility will house five operating theatres and a three-stage recovery area, a range of specialty units - High ependency, Day Oncology and Endoscopy - a Sleep Clinic and medical imaging, pathology and hospital pharmacy services and round-the-clock on-site medical coverage.  Professional medical suites will be located on the site and underground parking will be available for 150 cars.

The New Cabrini Hospital Brighton - A Nurses Perspective

“We’ll be part of a renowned health service where functional design, advanced technology and best practice are combined to provide the Bayside community with the highest quality care in association with the existing Cabrini Malvern.
Top-notch resources will mean we can achieve medical excellence centred on patient needs,” said Lisa Manning, a perioperative nurse at Cabrini Brighton.

Lisa ManningLisa, like all the staff at Cabrini Brighton, agrees that the ‘life’ of any organisation is its staff. “I’m very excited about all the changes because we’ll not only
have a beautiful larger working environment but more nursing staff.  We will be recruiting quite heavily over the next 12 months, so there will be lots of scope for full-time and part-time nurses,” said Lisa.

A genuine all-rounder, Lisa is typical of the nurses at Cabrini Brighton.  She trained at a large teaching hospital in Perth, moving to Melbourne 18 years ago where she worked at a number of public and private hospitals.

“From the moment I started here eight years ago I was immediately welcomed by everyone.  That’s not something that happens everywhere … there’s just a special warmth about the place.  I look forward to going to work, I enjoy the day-to-day challenges and the surgical advances that keep me on my toes,” she said.

“One of the best things about Cabrini Brighton is the continuity of staff … the nurses just seem to stay.  I’ve worked in hospitals with a high nursing turnover which means the bulk of the workload falls to a few individuals because the new staff members have not had time to learn the routines and procedures.  Fortunately that’s not the case here.

“Nurses stay at Cabrini Brighton because it’s just a very supportive place.  When my children started school, I was able to change my hours to suit family life, and because I’ve been so well looked after, I’m happy to fill in if someone is away.  It’s simply the best place for any nurse to work,” said Lisa.

She applauds the educational opportunities provided by the Cabrini Health organisation and believes that the nurses are offered all the help they need to achieve their professional goals.  As well as its university links, every year Cabrini offers its nurses a large number of learning packages ranging from respiratory anatomy and physiology to peripheral IV cannulation.  Nurses also have the chance to develop their clinical research skills through the Cabrini Deakin Centre for Nursing Research.
