Continuous wound infusion of local anaesthetic in the control of pain following elective abdominal colorectal surgery
Over the last 12 months our major focus has been the completion of the prospective randomized double blinded trial comparing the continuous wound infusion of local anaesthetic with placebo for post operative pain control following colorectal surgery. A total of 312 patients have been recruited over three years and currently the data is being analyzed and the final manuscript is in preparation.
Colorectal Cancer Database
The Monash University Collaborative Bowel Cancer Data Base Program is almost complete. This will be a multi centre data collaboration involving Cabrini Health, The Alfred Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. This unique browser data based colorectal data collection will underpin major collaborative research between the three Monash University teaching hospitals for many years to come.
Optiscan Pilot Study
Our ongoing relationship with Optiscan to assess the emerging confocal technology where the mucosa of the gastrointestinal can be examined invivo at 1000x magnification, continues. The project is currently focusing on the large bowel but in addition application of the technology to early diagnosis of oesophageal cancers is being investigated.
Does the use of Nizatidine as a prokinetic agent improve gastric emptying
in patients post oesophagectomy?
The aim of this trial is to assess the effect of Nizatadine on gastric
emptying in patients who have undergone oesophagectomy. This trial has been
completed and the data is being analysed.
Multicentre trial on the use of mesh to augment hiatal repair
This is a multicentre trial to investigate the use of mesh to augment hiatal repair in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery to repair giant hiatus hernias.
Gastric and gastro-oesophageal cancers
We continue to contribute tissue to the Peter MacCallum tissue bank to assist in a project examining genetic changes in patients with gastric and gastro-oesophageal cancers.
Open versus laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer
Recruitment is now complete for the NHMRC funded five year follow up study comparing open versus laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer, of which Cabrini has been a contributing Centre.
