Professor Adrian Polglase MBBS(Hons) MS, FRACS, FRCS (Eng), FRCS Ed, FACS

Professor Adrian Polglase

Adrian Polglase graduated with MBBS(Hons) from Monash University in 1970.  He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1977, and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1978.  In 1981 he was awarded the first Master of Surgery Degree by Monash University.  After surgical registrar training at The Alfred Hospital he was appointed as senior registrar at The Whittington Hospital, London, in 1976, and subsequently a senior registrar at St Marks Hospital, London, for advanced colorectal surgical training. 

Professor Polglase returned to The Alfred Hospital in 1978 and was appointed initially as assistant surgeon and then visiting surgeon in 1982.  In 1988 he was appointed as Chief of the Division of Surgery at Royal Southern Memorial Hospital, and subsequently following its amalgamation with The Alfred Hospital in 1989, Chief of Surgery and Head of the General Surgical Unit at Caulfield General Medical Centre.  In 1995 he assumed full time practice at Cabrini Hospital and was appointed Clinical Dean the same year.  In 1998 he was appointed Professor of Surgery.  Professor Polglase is currently Chairman of the Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery.

Clinical Associate Professor Simon Woods

Position - Clinical Associate Professor

A/Prof Woods is an Upper Gastrointestinal and Hernia surgeon with a long experience in open and laparoscopic surgery. He has a particular interest in the management of gastric and oesophageal malignancies, reflux and obesity surgery. He also has a large experience in laparoscopic repair of complex incisional hernias.

He has been involved with undergraduate teaching for many years and until recently was Monash University Clinical Dean at Cabrini Hospital.  For further information go to: www.simonwoods.com.au

Mr Paul McMurrick

Position - Specialist colorectal surgeon and senior lecturer in surgery, Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery.

Paul trained in surgery in the Alfred Hospital system and then completed his specialist colorectal surgical fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota in 1997.  He was formally consultant colorectal surgeon at the Alfred Hospital and Monash Medical Centre, and was head of colorectal services, Southern Health, 2001 - 2005.  He was a member of the Victorian State Committee of the College of Surgeons, 2000 - 2001.  He remains a member of the Victorian Clinical Oncology Group, Cancer Council of Victoria and the Hereditary Bowel Cancer Group, Cancer Council of Victoria.

Paul now works full-time at Cabrini Health as a clinical colorectal surgeon with speciality interests in treatment and prevention of colorectal cancer and general colorectal conditions.  His role in the Institute involves clinical teaching of medical students, post-graduate teaching of surgical trainees and research.  Key research interests include epidemiology of colorectal cancer and risk stratification for adverse outcome following colorectal cancer surgery.  Paul regularly lectures on treatment of colorectal conditions and has published multiple research articles, clinical reviews and book chapters in colon and rectal surgery in the last 10 years. 

Paul is married with three young boys and interests include photography and scuba diving.

Mr Stephen Bell

Position - Colorectal Surgeon; Senior Lecturer, Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery

Mr Bell completed his medical degree at Monash University in 1991, and subsequently trained in General Surgery at The Alfred Hospital. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2000, and went on to Specialist Colorectal training on the Australasian Colorectal Training Program.

He is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, and is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery. He is Deputy Chair of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Committee, Victorian Cooperative Oncology Group, The Cancer Council, Victoria, and is Editor of Gastrointestinal Cancer Update. Mr. Bell is actively involved in research in numerous areas of colorectal surgery. Special areas of interest include colorectal neoplasia, inflammatory bowel disease, laparoscopic surgery, colonoscopy and colonoscopic stenting, and new techniques in the treatment of faecal incontinence.

Mr Peter Carne

Position - Colorectal Surgeon; Senior Lecturer, Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery

I completed my medical degree at Melbourne University in 1993 and subsequently trained in General Surgery at The Alfred Hospital. In 2002 I became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Following this I completed the Australasian Post-Fellowship Training Programme in Colon and Rectal Surgery in 2003. This two year programme included 12 months in Christchurch, New Zealand and a 12 month Clinical Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. My practice is limited to the specialty of Colorectal Surgery. Aside from consulting and operating at Cabrini Medical Centre, I hold appointments as a Colorectal Surgeon at The Alfred Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. Special areas of interest include: colorectal neoplasia; inflammatory bowel disease; pelvic tumours, including recurrent rectal cancer; laparoscopic colorectal surgery; colonoscopy & endoscopic stenting. I am a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. I am actively involved in colorectal research and teaching of undergraduates and post-graduate trainees.

Mr Chip Farmer

Position - Honorary Senior Lecturer

Mr Farmer completed his medical degree at Monash University in 1981 with first class honors, and his Resident and General Surgical Training were undertaken at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne.  Mr Farmer became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1988 and the spent four years overseas completing Specialist Colorectal Surgical Training at the world renowned centres of St Mark's Hospital, London and The Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, U.S.A.

At present, Mr Farmer holds an appointment as Senior Lecturer, Monash University Department of Surgery Cabrini Hospital and is Acting Head of Colorectal Surgery at The Alfred Hospital.  He is Co-Director of the Melbourne Gastrointestinal Investigation Unit at Cabrini Hospital.

Mr Farmer is actively involved in surgical training programs and his research interests include Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery, Rectal Cancer and Anorectal Physiology.  Mr Farmer currently serves on the Executive Council of The Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand as Vice President.
