Cabrini Institute

Academic Department
Cabrini – Monash University Department of Medicine

The Cabrini – Monash University Department of Medicine was established in September 2006.  This new department of Cabrini Institute will provide a focus for academic medicine amongst physicians within Cabrini Health and will enhance the academic standing of Cabrini as an academic tertiary institution.

The Department of Medicine research program is focused on improving patient care at all levels – from patient contacts with the Emergency Department through the hospital experience through to discharge back home.  The department has chosen to focus on some common medical problems and the initial areas of research include improving the care of patients with fractured hips and osteoporosis, and of patients who collapse at home.  Other research initiatives include a cardiology research group, research evaluating the use of evidence in hospital based medical practice, and development of an ethics based research program and a research program investigating medical education methods.

The Department of Medicine is responsible for undergraduate general medicine education for Monash University third year medical students.  The department provides bedside teaching, problem based learning and education in investigative medicine over a twelve month period.
