Cabrini Institute - Education
The Cabrini Clinical School was established to coordinate, manage and promote clinical education and research within Cabrini Health.
Cabrini Health is an active participant in undergraduate and post-graduate education in nursing, medicine and allied health sciences. It has been seen as part of our Mission to support education in health care. This is supported in practical ways by many health professionals within Cabrini Health and by the various Institute education grants to nurses
There are undergraduate students at Cabrini Health in the disciplines of radiography, nuclear medicine, nursing, dietetics and medicine. There are postgraduate students in multiple specialty areas of nursing, fellows in radiology, a medical registrar, registrar in haematology (a jointed position with Peter MacCallum), a surgical registrar and surgical research fellow, postgraduate courses in a variety of medical fields and Masters and PhD students within the academic departments of Nursing and Clinical Epidemiology.
Over 200 undergraduate student nurses come through Cabrini clinical placements each year. The majority of these are from Deakin University and Australian Catholic University. Cabrini Health also takes 25 Graduate Year Nurses for their important transition year following graduation. Cabrini Health is now accepted as a teaching hospital within the private sector, with the hospital Education Department responsible for the nursing education program.
Undergraduate Medical Students
Within the Institute, medical education is a major priority area.
In 2006, Cabrini became a Regional Clinical School of the Monash University
Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Cabrini with the Bayside
Hospitals (Alfred, Sandringham and Caulfield) and Box Hill, make up the Central
and Eastern Clinical School.
Cabrini has been involved in the Monash undergraduate teaching program
since the early 1980’s. Until 2005, students rotated through Cabrini
for 6-8 week terms. In 2006 Cabrini Health commenced a new medical student
program as part of the Monash University new 5 year curriculum. This was the first time a group
of medical students viewed Cabrini as their principal clinical school and
not just a rotation from a major public teaching hospital. 3rd Year Monash University Medical students now come to Cabrini for a 12 month
placement.
Following the successful implementation of the third year medical student program at Cabrini in 2006, the program has continued and each February we welcome a new group of students. Associate Professor Michele Levinson (Clinical Dean) and Dr John Reeves (Associate Clinical Dean) have developed a full teaching program for the students. The program provides a mixture of bedside and workshop-based teaching across the whole spectrum of medicine and surgery. The Cabrini program has a strong emphasis on professional behaviour and role modelling for medical practice. The program succeeds because of the support of the Cabrini medical specialist staff in all aspects of the teaching. In 2009, for the first time, we will also have some fourth year paediatric students rotating through the Paediatric Centre.
Postgraduate Medical Training
2008 saw the start of Cabrini Health’s involvement in the Commonwealth pilot program for postgraduate medical training in the private sector. In 2008 we had advanced trainees in general medicine and surgery and in 2009 we have expanded our involvement with additional positions in neurology, upper gastrointestinal surgery, pathology and intensive care.
