Nursing At Cabrini

Nursing At Cabrini - Specialities - Coronary Care Unit

Equipped with 18 monitored beds, the Coronary Care Unit works in conjunction with the Emergency Department and the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.

CCU nurses offer integrated care for patients with acute cardiac emergencies including heart attacks, pre- and post-angiogram, angioplasty and pacemaker/AICD procedural patients, rhythm monitoring, full haemodynamic pressure monitoring, IABP, inotropic drug support, heart failure management and other cardiac emergencies. They also care for patients who have high-risk post-operative surgery, complicated by cardiac event, or arrhythmias. Coronary Care also provides nursing staff for the 24 hour cover of MET call and Code Blue within the hospital.

All patients are encouraged to participate in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and are referred to a program either at Cabrini or closer home. The Coronary Care Unit works with cardiac rehabilitation staff to ensure follow-up care to increase quality of life and a change in lifestyle patterns to maintain cardiac progress after discharge.

Nursing staff avail themselves of mentorship and competency based programs led by the Unit’s senior staff.  All staff have responsibility for a portfolio allowing them to drive change management in coronary care.  The Unit works in conjunction with the Intensive Care Unit, the Critical Care Educator and Cabrini’s Education Department to offer a Graduate Diploma of Nursing Practice in Critical Care.
