3 Central - Medical Gerontology
Nurses and geriatricians on the Gerontology Medical Ward are committed to developing and implementing improved services in caring for the older patient.
Initiatives have created an elder-friendly environment and include education and support, speciality staffing and evidence-based practice through research and practice development.
The appointment of a full time geriatrician and two part-time geriatricians has provided further impetus to improve the care and management of older patients and the creation of more timely and appropriate discharge of patients.
Additionally, a Transitional Care Unit (TCU) of 10 beds, operates on the
Ward. The aim of the care in the Transitional Care Unit is to provide a program
of independence, increased mobility and nutrition to assist the recovery of
the patient from an acute illness, surgery or an exacerbation of a chronic
condition.
Nurses enjoy a stimulating environment caring for older people with
a wide variety of complex diagnoses and co-morbidities. As the Ward
accepts elective and emergency medical patients, nurses are challenged to
find creative solutions to a wide array of patient issues.
