Emergency
The Emergency Department is fully supported by Cabrini’s comprehensive range of services and they include:
- extensive Cardiac and Intensive Care facilities
- 24 hour 7 day a week pathology and medical imaging
- access to state-of-the-art operating theatres and hospital accommodation
- on-call specialists
- specialist emergency medical and nursing staff.
Fees
Patients can expect a maximum out-of-pocket expense of $430.00. The fee is partially rebateable from Medicare. Accounts are required to be settled on discharge from the Emergency Department. Credit card and EFTPOS facilities are available for your convenience.
Diagnostic Services such as Pathology and Medical Imaging (Xray) will be billed separate to the Emergency Department and are part claimable from Medicare.
Should you require an admission to hospital following your attendance at the Emergency Department, all health fund excess and co payments will apply to your hospital account in addition to the Emergency Department fees.
Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) will cover the costs
of the Emergency Department visit for gold cardholders. White card holders
will only be covered if the attendance is
related to their disability.
Third Party Claims such as Workcover and TAC will be billed to the relevant authority, however, should the claim be rejected an account will be sent to the patient for payment.
There is no discount for Pensioner and Concession cardholders. All Emergency Department fees will apply.

Fast Track Unit
In addition to normal Emergency Department services, Cabrini Health offers
the Fast Track Unit.
Enter via the Emergency Department.
The Unit specifically handles minor injuries quickly and efficiently, resulting in short patient waiting times.
Clinic Hours
Friday to Tuesday each week
12.00 noon – 8.00 pm
No appointment necessary.
General admissions
Your doctor has made the booking for your admission and, therefore, confirmation is unnecessary.
However, the Pre-Admission Information form must be completed and returned to Cabrini either by mail, or fax. If this is not possible, please telephone Cabrini Health.
We suggest you confirm the day and arrival time with your doctor and check that your insurance fund membership is current. (Please bring your private health insurance details with you.)

On arrival
- Please attend Reception where you will be admitted.
- Following admission you will be escorted to your room.
- Nursing staff will advise you of the services available during your stay and the care and treatment you may require after discharge.
- Please inform the nursing staff if you have any special needs or questions.
- Every effort will be made to provide a single room if one has been requested. However, a single room is not always available.
During your stay
During your stay in hospital, you will be under the direct care of your
specialist. However, your doctor may call upon other specialist medical
practitioners and health professionals to assist with your treatment. Your
doctor will inform you if this is required and will make the necessary arrangements. At
all times Intensive Care Fellows and Medical Fellows are available within
the Hospital to assist in your care.
All doctors accredited to Cabrini Hospital are committed to excellence to ensure you receive the best medical care available. If you have any concerns about your progress or any other aspect of your care, please consult your doctor.
Menus, nutrition and dietetics
- Menus are distributed by Nutrition Assistants who can assist you with selection and completion of your menu.
- Please inform the Nutrition Assistant
- if you require specially prepared meals for medical, religious or cultural reasons
- if you have lost weight recently
- if you have a poor appetite or other problems that cause you difficulty making a selection from the menu.
- Dieticians are available to advise you if you have special dietary requirements during your stay or require on-going nutritional care after discharge.
- You can make an appointment to see a Dietician as an outpatient by telephoning 9508 1212 or 9509 1930. A fee is charged for this service. A doctor’s referral is not required.
Discharge
Discharge time is between 8.00 am and 10.00 am. Patients are asked to respect
this time frame and there is a demand for beds. A late discharge fee
may be applied.
Before you leave you will be provided with information appointments and discharge instructions as appropriate. Please advise Reception of your departure.
Day oncology patients
Unless your doctor has given you specific instruction there is no preparation necessary prior to your treatment. Please eat and drink fluids as you would normally
- Wear loose, comfortable attire
- Health insurance book or verification
- Pharmaceutical entitlement cards.
- List of all current medications.
- Current medication in original container/packet (except Day Oncology patients).
- Medicare card/pension card/VeteransAffairs card.
- Relevant X-rays or other imaging scans and pathology reports.
- A favourite toy or game (children).
Please do not bring valuables or jewellery. Cabrini Health will not be liable for any loss or damage to property.
Account enquiries
Hospital charges and operating theatre fees differ according to the reason for admission, health fund and level of cover.
Patients should check with their health funds to confirm that admission to hospital is covered and if there are any other payments which will apply.

For uninsured, basic health cover or patients undergoing cosmetic procedures, an estimate of costs can be obtained prior to hospital admission by contacting Patient Services Department on the above numbers. The estimate is required to be paid on admission.
GST charges apply to all cosmetic procedures (accommodation and theatre) guest meals, all phone calls and other miscellaneous charges.
On admission to hospital, you will be provided with a written estimate of out-of-pocket expenses. Those expenses not covered by a patient health fund are to be paid on discharge.
Cabrini Health accepts Bankcard, VISA, Mastercard, cash, cheque or EFTPOS.
Veterans Affairs
Cabrini health holds a Tier 1 classification with the Department
of VeteransAffairs. This is the same arrangement as that of Victoria
public hospitals.
The agreement allows doctors to admit entitled veteran, war widow/widower patients without obtaining prior financial approval from the Department of VeteransAffairs.
However, as arrangements with the Department of VeteransAffairs may vary over time, please discuss possible out-of-pocket expenses with either the Department of VeteransAffairs or your admitting doctor.
Motor Accident (TAC)
Approval must be obtained from the TAC prior to admission (shared
accommodation only). Cabrini Health requires a claim number and date
of accident. If a private room is requested, a daily co-payment will apply.
Work Cover
Approval must be obtained prior to admission (shared accommodation
only). Cabrini Health requires a claim number and employer details
including name, address, insurance company and contact. If a private
room is requested, a daily co-payment will apply.
Health Professionals
Doctors and health professionals will
bill you separately for their professional services. We suggest,
prior to admission, you discuss details with your doctor.
Medical Imaging & Pathology
These services will be billed separately to your hospital account
and are rebatable from Medicare and/or your health fund. An out-of-pocket
expense may apply for these services.
Pharmacy
Prescriptions dispensed for drugs prescribed prior to admission,
and drugs or medicines prescribed to take home, will be billed directly
to you by Cabrini Pharmacy.
