I am a specialist reconstructive plastic surgeon specialising in the management of lymphoedema and lipoedema. I have clinical and basic science interests in both these areas, having performed over 500 lymphoedema microsurgical procedures (including LVA and LNT surgery) and 500 liposuction and debulking operations for lymphoedema and lipoedema. I jointly run research groups studying lipoedema and lymphatic diseases and tissue engineering adipose-derived stem cells for treatment of diseases afflicting cancer survivors, such as radiation-induced tissue injury and lymphoedema.
I also perform general plastic surgery, including hand surgery and aesthetic surgery of the body and face. I work publicly at St Vincent’s and The Alfred and in private practice in Brighton and Cabrini Brighton.
I have over 60 peer-reviewed publications, including in the journals Nature, Cancer Cell and Nature Reviews in the areas of lymphatic biology. In 2015, I became the Director of the O’Brien Microsurgery Institute (OBI) at the St Vincent’s Institute investigating tissue engineering and the molecular science behind diseases of cancer survivorship and regenerative medicine. I am the editor of six international academic journals and on the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons education committee and I have been convenor of RACS ASC in plastic surgery 2020-21.
