Dr Owen McKay
Gastroenterologist
I am a specialist Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist with advanced expertise in interventional endoscopy, including ERCP including cholangioscopy, diagnostic and interventional endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), single and double balloon enteroscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and the management of complex gastrointestinal bleeding. I combine evidence-based care with a compassionate, patient-centred approach to support patients with complex digestive and liver conditions.
I completed my medical degree at the University of Newcastle and undertook physician training at Royal North Shore Hospital, followed by advanced gastroenterology training at major tertiary centres including Sydney and Canberra. I then completed two dedicated interventional endoscopy fellowships at Westmead Hospital and Monash Health, further developing expertise in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and EUS.
Alongside clinical practice, I am actively engaged in translational research and about to submit my PhD to Monash University focused on advanced endoscopic tissue sampling as a platform to allow comprehensive genomic profiling in pancreatic and biliary tract cancers.
I am committed to teaching and mentoring trainees, and value collaborative care with referring clinicians, ensuring clear communication, timely access, and a supportive patient experience, including urgent referrals and direct-access endoscopy where required.
