Mr Matt Gutman

I am a neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon with a special interest in functional neurosurgery and mapping for brain tumours and epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm, aneurysm surgery and spinal surgery.

After completing basic physicians training, I chose to embark on a path of neurosurgery and undertook training through the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) program. After completing my Australian fellowship in neurosurgery, I undertook subspecialty fellowship training in neuro-endoscopy at the CURE hospital in Mbale, Uganda. After completing this fellowship, I moved to the United Kingdom to undertake fellowships in functional neurosurgery at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen’s Square) and Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrooke’s) to refine my skills in complex neurovascular disorders and minimally invasive spine surgery.

After returning to Australia to work as a neurosurgeon, I was appointed as Head of Epilepsy Surgery at the Alfred Hospital, and continue to work as a neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon at the Austin Hospital. My private practice is based out of Cabrini Hospital where I practice spinal surgery and neurosurgery.

In 2023, I was recipient of the Dr Lena Elizabeth McEwan and Dame Joyce Daws Churchill Fellowship in Surgery (Neuromodulation and Lesioning) and returned overseas to undertake further sub-specialty training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and other centres in the USA.

In 2024, I established Victoria’s first Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) program for brain tumours and epilepsy at The Alfred Hospital and subsequently at Cabrini Hospital.
