Shirley Nimon: A Beacon of Compassion and Comfort at Cabrini Since 2008

Shirley Nimon, a dedicated Patient social visiting volunteer at Cabrini since 2008, embodies the spirit of compassion and empathy, providing company and solace to patients in their times of need.

Her journey as a volunteer was inspired by her personal experience of caring for her younger brother during his battle with bowel cancer at Cabrini, where he received palliative care until his passing in 2006. Together, Shirley and her brother made a pact to give back to Cabrini, fostering a legacy of care and kindness that continues to uplift patients facing their most vulnerable moments.

With a heart fuelled by empathy and guided by her family’s values, Shirley warmly greets patients, offering a friendly voice to those feeling lonely or in need of a compassionate ear. Her commitment to ensuring that no patient feels alone or forgotten stems from her upbringing, where her mother instilled the principle of “never leaving anyone in need behind”.

“Every patient deserves to feel loved and supported,” says Shirley. “Regardless of age or circumstance, I believe in being there for them, especially during their darkest times.”

Shirley vividly recalls the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, when patients were separated from many of their loved ones, when able, she reached out to provide the support and companionship needed by many to navigate through the times of uncertainty.

Reflecting on her invaluable contribution, Shirley emphasises that the essence of patient experience lies in genuine care and human connection. She embodies this ethos daily, serving as a beacon of comfort and compassion to those under Cabrini’s care.

Shirley Nimon’s unwavering dedication and compassionate presence exemplify Cabrini’s commitment to holistic patient care and community support. Cabrini believes in not just caring for patients and their families but also caring about them. Shirley’s acts of kindness serve as a reminder that, in times of hardship, a caring touch and a listening ear can make all the difference.
