A/Prof Andrew Symons
Ophthalmologist
I’m a vitreoretinal and cataract surgeon, as well as a medical retina specialist, with extensive experience across Australia and the United States in private practice, academic settings, and trauma centres. I routinely perform surgery for retinal conditions such as retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, vitreomacular traction, floaters, and vitreous haemorrhage. I also specialise in cataract surgery, including complex lens procedures for patients with coexisting retinal disease.
I provide a range of treatments including laser therapy and intravitreal injections for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and retinal tears. My approach is always patient-centred—I know that everyone’s sight is precious, and I’m committed to helping each person achieve their best possible visual outcome.
I understand that every patient is unique, with different visual needs, medical conditions, and life circumstances. I take the time to discuss all treatment options carefully, ensuring each person has the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their care.
I completed my medical degree at the University of Melbourne, followed by a PhD in genetics at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. I trained in ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, then undertook advanced subspecialty training in medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery, and ophthalmic research at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States. During my time in the U.S., I worked at the University of Kansas as Director of Medical Retina and Vitreoretinal Surgery, Director of Ophthalmic Research, and Director of the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation. I returned to Melbourne in 2012 to take up the role of Head of Ophthalmology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Throughout my career, I’ve participated in clinical trials involving retinal disease treatments such as bevacizumab (Avastin), ranibizumab (Lucentis), and other emerging therapies. My research interests include the protection of the retinal vascular system, and I continue to contribute to the scientific community through publications and conference presentations.
I am a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
