Events

Celebrating medical research as a community

Events play an important role in sharing knowledge across Cabrini Research, our community, and the general public. They foster a greater understanding of our work, while providing forums for rigorous discourse and collaboration that generate new insights for our path to discovery.

Amongst our seminars and presentations, the Peter Meese Memorial Lecture, and both our Research Sessions and Forum are key events that draw our institution and community together. A tribute to the work of our researchers across our themes and departments, they offer a glimpse into the future we seek to realise for healthcare.

Peter Meese Memorial Lecture

A Lifetime of Impact

A highly regarded infectious disease physician, Dr Meese is widely remembered for his social and cultural impact in transforming perceptions towards HIV/AIDS in Australia. Navigating epidemiological uncertainties while overcoming fierce stigmatisation, his tireless efforts ensured the delivery of resources critical to the diagnosis and management of the disease.

His commitment to advocate for and provide a voice to marginalised groups underpins a legacy embedded in the lives of countless individuals able to far outlive the death sentence associated with HIV/AIDS at that time. In highlighting systemic inequities in our healthcare system, Dr Meese was also able to inspire a whole generation of scientists and clinicians to enact change for their communities.

Dr Meese was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 1999, passing away in 2000. The Peter Meese Memorial Lecture was established through the philanthropic vision of his partner, Dr Darren Lockie. Supported in recognition of the care provided by Cabrini’s oncology and palliative care nursing staff, the Lecture aims to remember Dr Meese by continuing his work and lifetime of impact.

Past Speakers and Lectures

The Peter Meese Memorial Lecture is delivered annually by healthcare leaders who have devoted their life to serving others, reflecting the life and legacy of Dr Peter Meese. It offers an opportunity to reflect upon Cabrini’s purpose to not only improve patient outcomes today, but also transform the health of future generations. For more than three decades, the Lecture has been delivered alongside the awarding of grants and scholarships, aimed at supporting the development of future leaders in cancer care. Since 2021, these have been recorded and are accessible by the links provided below.

Cabrini Research Sessions and Forum

Research Sessions

The Cabrini Research Sessions are a virtual seminar series demonstrating our work across our research departments. Presenting innovative and clinically impactful achievements made throughout the year, these monthly sessions also provide an opportunity for our scientists and clinicians to highlight key challenges while seeking solutions to their key research questions.

In doing so, the Sessions have become a vital forum for open and rigorous multi-disciplinary discourse, creating pathways for increased knowledge sharing and collaboration. They have also facilitated greater community engagement, with consumers and advocates invited to attend by a publicly available link and play an active role in discussions.

Research Forum

The Cabrini Research Forum is an annual event, complementing our Research Sessions. They allow our researchers to present work regardless of its stage of development, similarly outlining both achievements and challenges through poster submissions.

A Call for Abstracts will be made throughout mid-July to -August, with posters viewed virtually by the Cabrini community throughout the month of October. This will include evaluation from a multi-disciplinary panel of experts and consumers, alongside a popular vote, determining awards in seven categories that are announced at each November Research Session.

2024 Schedule and Recordings

Unless key conflicts require rescheduling, Research Sessions are typically held on the first Wednesday of each month from noon. The schedule below is periodically updated with access provided ahead of each session by Zoom link.

Recordings are also uploaded shortly after the conclusion of each session, with previous years accessible through our Research Session Archive. Note that when sensitive unpublished information or data is presented, recordings may not be uploaded.
