Next Era plans 400x400

In a redevelopment milestone, Cabrini Health has been granted town planning approval for the next stage of its Cabrini Malvern ‘Next Era’ redevelopment, which includes a new East Building on Coonil Crescent.

The approval comes after consultation with the local community, the City of Stonnington and the Victorian Government, and careful consideration of significant factors including traffic flow, parking, green space, building height and pedestrian access.

Cabrini Chief Executive, Sue Williams, said the approval marks a major step forward for the hospital.

“We’re delighted to have received planning approval for this important redevelopment,” Ms Williams said. “This project will allow Cabrini to expand capacity and continue meeting the growing healthcare needs of our community, now and well into the future.”

By 2036, more than 150,000 patients are expected to seek care at Cabrini each year, many of whom will require comprehensive cancer, cardiac, orthopaedic and palliative care services. The redevelopment will deliver two state of the art wards, with modern clinical facilities, inpatient accommodation with ensuite bathrooms, and expanded consulting space.

The plans also include a palliative care ward, upgrades to the main foyer for easier navigation of the hospital, the addition of a forecourt with café, an underground carpark with 170 additional parking spaces, and a dedicated emergency department drop-off zone.

“A heartfelt thank you goes to our donor community, which makes this important project possible,” Ms Williams said. “We thank them for their generosity, vision and passion for quality healthcare.

“I would also like to acknowledge our local residents for their feedback into the redevelopment and their forbearance during the various building works.”

The town planning approval considers the overall footprint and use of the site, with detailed design work to continue over the coming months.

Ground preparation work, including the diversion of underground essential services, will soon commence to prepare the site for construction.
