Cabrini has officially opened its brand-new Exercise and Wellness Centre at 261 Wattletree Road, Malvern. Formerly the Cancer Exercise and Wellness Centre, the stunning new location now unites outpatient rehabilitation and allied health services focused on improving longevity and fullness of life for those living with and recovering from cancer, as well as cardiac and respiratory illnesses.

Welcoming patients to the fit-for-purpose facility on Monday 17 February, the team were able to provide a smooth transition of classes, services and supports from the original site within the Malvern hospital and Elsternwick.

Cabrini haematologist and oncologist, A/Professor Melita Kenealy, said, “Patient feedback has been invaluable in helping us refine our services, and we are excited to continue working closely with our patients to further develop our cancer programs and services in this new, larger space.”

Commenting on the desire to provide a less clinical-feeling space for Wellness Centre patients, Katie Dixon Acting Director of Allied Health & Outpatient Services and Head of Physiotherapy, highlighted the centre’s warm environment.

“Many of our patients have spent considerable time in hospital during the acute phases of their illness. We really want to provide somewhere separate to that, where they can feel calm, welcome and focus on regaining their physical and psychological strength. We’re confident this lovely new space just down from the hospital offers that.”

Among the offerings at the new Cabrini Exercise and Wellness Centre, patients have access to exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, dieticians, psychologists and tailored education and exercise classes. There are also support groups, mindfulness and relaxation classes designed to meet the needs of Cabrini cancer patients. At the site patients will find a newly fit out gym, an education space, bright new consulting rooms as well as off-street parking.

The move of the centre into its own, dedicated space, has freed up real estate for the expansion of the Cabrini Cancer Institute, which will now move from offices further up Wattletree road, into the Malvern hospital, allowing better facilities for research staff and greater accessibility for the clinical trial patients it supports.
