Cabrini’s Next Era redevelopment continues to progress, with the early works program entering its next phase as preparations continue for construction of the new East Building.

The early works program is delivering essential site preparation and underground services infrastructure, before major excavation and foundation works can begin. This work will continue through August and September, with the main building contractor expected to be appointed in September ahead of major construction commencing later in the year.

From Monday 17 August, the outdoor doctors’ car park on the corner of Coonil Crescent and Wattletree Road will permanently close and become part of the construction site.

Works taking place during August and into September include:

• Delivery of construction materials to site
• Trenching and service rerouting works
• Boring beneath the hospital driveway to divert essential underground services
• Removal of asphalt and debris from the former car park
• Removal of trees from the construction site
• Mobilisation of demolition equipment and machinery
• Demolition of the existing dwellings on Coonil Crescent
• Rebuilding of pedestrian walkways
• Increased construction vehicle movements via Coonil Crescent, coordinated by our early works contractor, Kingdom Projects

Throughout this period, the Malvern campus will be more congested than usual. Temporary lane closures, traffic management and pedestrian diversions will be in place at various stages as works progress.

As a result, entering and exiting the hospital campus and public car park may take longer than usual, particularly during peak periods. We encourage patients to allow extra travel time when attending appointments.

Cabrini Malvern Executive Director Louise Alexander said the early works program is a critical stage in Cabrini’s redevelopment activity.

“While these activities will result in some increased noise, construction traffic and temporary disruption over the coming months, they are an essential step towards delivering this significant investment in healthcare for our community.

“We’ve been carefully planning these works to reduce their impact wherever possible. From mid-August, many Cabrini staff will relocate their parking to a nearby off-site facility, helping to ease traffic around the hospital while construction activity is underway.

“Thank you to our neighbours, patients and visitors for their patience and understanding as we progress this exciting project. The project team have had some valuable conversations with neighbours, and we really appreciate their level of engagement.

Any urgent disruptions or changes to site access will also be communicated via Cabrini’s social media channels.

Looking ahead

Once the main building contractor has been appointed, Cabrini will provide the community with more detailed information about the major construction program, including construction sequencing, designs, expected timelines and what to expect during each stage of the build.
