As we usher in a new year, we also usher in a new era in medical imaging at Cabrini Malvern with the installation of a new next-generation Digital PET/CT scanner, fully funded by generous Cabrini Foundation donors.

This new scanner, which was delivered to Cabrini Malvern on 10 December and will be operational in early-January, will allow our teams of urologists, oncologists, neurologists and surgeons to diagnose patients faster and with greater accuracy – meaning treatment can begin sooner. It will also reduce radiation doses to our patients by up to 40 per cent.

Cabrini urologist Associate Professor Daniel Moon said this next-gen scanner is “fantastic”.

“It will give us a better understanding of the extent of the patient’s disease, and it means we’re less likely to miss cancer elsewhere. It’s finding things earlier when they’re smaller,” he said.

The Digital PET/CT scanner was purchased with funds raised at our Cabrini Foundation Giving Day, held in June this year, and from a generous bequest.

This new scanner will deliver:

  • Faster scan times, allowing up to a 20 per cent increase in the number of appointments available on a daily basis.
  • Sharper, clearer images, providing more detailed information and improving the accuracy of diagnosis.
  • The potential to reduce overall radiation doses to our patients by up to 40 per cent.

Last year, Cabrini’s Medical Imaging team, made up of 70 medical imaging technologists, 20 sonographers, 15 cardiac sonographers, 12 nuclear medicine technologists and 12 Genesis Care radiation therapists, performed more than 150,000 medical imaging examinations.
